1) The Persistence of Memory (Soft Watches) 1931
Oil on Canvas size 24*33 cm
2) Salvador Dali uses melting watches to epitomize time, its two components of shape, and human perception. Dali chose to depict soft versions of time because he wanted to stress that time flows in the likeness of a fluid rather then tick like a solid object. Furthermore Dali might have chosen soft watches to represent human memory which seems to melt away as time passes.
3) I was attracted to this painting because it depicts a familiar object in an unfamiliar and unlikely context. I am also fascinated with time and its physical properties, trying to illustrate an abstract physical propertie intrigues me.
